Frequently Asked Questions

What sets IMK apart from other Karate schools, such as the many teaching Tae Kwon Do?

IMK has its roots in Okinawa rather than Korea (tae kwon do) and strives to accurately preserve and teach the cultural aspects of the art rather than approach it as a simple "sport". We prepare our students not only for competition, but also teach them skills that are readily applicable for true self-defense rather than "show".

Can anyone participate?

Absolutely! We accept students from school-age up to well into middle age. Age is never a barrier to learning, gaining confidence, and improving physical and mental fitness through karate

Will I really learn self-defense techniques?

Traditional Okinawan karate is known for its heavy emphasis on practical application to self-defense. We are not a "board breaking school"; our students are equipped with effective and highly practical skill sets. You will be taught these skills, but you will also be taught the discipline to know when as well as how they should be applied.

Do I need to have a uniform?

Karate uniforms (Gi) are not required to begin the class. Once a student moves from investigation to desiring to learn and develop as a student, a uniform becomes an important tool for teaching and learning.
